As communities across China and around the world prepare to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, millions of people will take part in one of the oldest and most meaningful traditional festivals in Chinese culture.
Also known as the Duanwu Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival is observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. In 2026, the festival falls on June 19.
The Dragon Boat Festival is widely associated with the story of Qu Yuan, a respected poet and statesman who lived during the Warring States Period.
According to traditional accounts, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after learning of the fall of his homeland. Local people are said to have paddled boats into the river to search for him and threw rice into the water to protect his body from fish. These customs later evolved into dragon boat racing and the preparation of zongzi.
Dragon boat racing remains one of the most recognized traditions of the festival. Teams of paddlers race long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails while synchronized drumming helps maintain rhythm and teamwork.
Today, dragon boat competitions are held throughout China and in many countries around the world, promoting cultural exchange and community participation.
Another important tradition is the preparation and sharing of zongzi, a traditional food made from glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.
Different regions have developed unique recipes, including sweet and savory varieties filled with ingredients such as red bean paste, dates, pork, salted egg yolks, and chestnuts.
In 2009, the Dragon Boat Festival was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
Today, the festival continues to bring families and communities together through cultural activities, traditional foods, and sporting events.
